The April, 2013 UCBC Trade Mission is designed to provide specific information to small and mid-sized businesses (SMEs), to aid them in evaluating the opportunity and risk of doing business in China. China will be the world’s largest importer by 2014. It also has the second largest consumer luxury market accounting for over 20% of that sector’s global. U.S. designed and branded goods hold a special marque to the newly rich Chinese.
Our primary focus is to help you be successful at developing the China market for your products, mitigate risks and take advantage of that massive consuming population. We will do this by providing a first-hand look at China - - its markets, manufacturing and distribution systems - - and to provide very specific and actionable knowledge, understanding and contacts. This mission also will provide experience to help you successfully navigate sourcing of material or components, manufacturing in China and tapping of China sources for inward investment in U.S. SMEs.
Day 1 Apr 16th Tuesday Minneapolis/Hong Kong
Fly from Minneapolis to Hong Kong.
Day 2 Apr 17th Wednesday Hong Kong
Evening arrival in Hong Kong. This city is a true economic powerhouse. Informal gathering at hotel.
Day 3 Apr 18th Thursday Hong Kong - Guangzhou (B/L/D)
Morning: visit Hong Kong container yard to glimpse the science of international logistics. Lunch with U.S. Commercial Service and Hong Kong Economic Development executives to discuss market opportunities. Then meet with local Chinese businessmen for a briefing on distributing your product in China, followed by a visit to a wine warehouse and storage operation. After dinner, on to Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, a city with a 2,000 year history. As an important transportation hub and trading port, it is known as the southern gateway to China.
Day 4 Apr 19th Friday Guangzhou (B/D)
Bus to Pazhou Exhibition Center to attend Canton Fair Phase I (audio visual, computers, and tools). David Lee of Moda Nova will help us navigate the Fair. Later we‘ll have a relaxing dinner with business and government officials to further review market opportunities. Afterwards take an evening city tour or relax on your own.
Day 5 Apr 20th Saturday Guangzhou – Dongguan – Shenzhen (B/L/D)
Drive to Dongguan or Panyu to meet city officials, then on to Shenzhen, the first special economic zone of China. Shenzhen's modern cityscape and vibrant economy are the result of concentrated investments that transformed a once small fishing village.
Day 6 Apr 21st Sunday Shenzhen (B/L/D)
Morning visit with local business people, U.S. Consulate trade representatives, accounting and legal experts for a Shenzhen economic overview. After lunch, take in city sights like the Cultural Village theme park.
Day 7 Apr 22nd Monday Shenzhen - Guangzhou (B/D)
Tour Lifetech Scientific in the Nanshan District High-Tech Park. LifeTech is a leading developer and manufacturer of minimally invasive medical devices for cardiovascular and peripheral vascular diseases. Minnesotan Mark Cibuzar, Global Sales & Marketing Manager and company execs will describe how they incorporate US-made components.
Day 8 Apr 23rd Tuesday Guangzhou / Xiamen (B/D)
Return to the Canton Fair for Phase II (bags, furniture, electrical, gifts, premiums, household, toys, games, lighting). Afternoon flight to Xiamen, on the southeast coast (Taiwan Straits). One of China’s first four Special Economic Zones open to foreign investment and trade, it has a diverse, well-developed economy and a sophisticated manufacturing base. Evening dinner hosted by local business owners and government officials.
Day 9 Apr 24th Wednesday Xiamen - Shanghai (B/D)
Visit Landy International, a global leader in the manufacturer of bed, body and bath sets (a GPM and ISO 9001 certified factory). Afternoon visit, with Chinese American Dr. David Lin, to Innovax Biotech Co. Ltd, a vaccine and medical device company located in the Haicang district. Take an evening flight to Shanghai, the largest financial, industrial and commercial center in mainland China. Evening Get-Together.
Day 10 Apr 25th Thursday Shanghai (B/L/D)
Visit Minnesota Trade Office branch in Shanghai. Presentation by Anthony Goh, USPRI small business expert; US Consulate Service. Touring Shanghai or visiting a Minnesota based company in the afternoon. Farewell Dinner cruise on Huangpu river.
Day 11 Apr 26th Friday Shanghai / Minneapolis (B)
Return flight from Shanghai to Minneapolis.
